My brother, Tracy and his wife, Christy were expecting their first child—a girl. I was so excited for them and for me! I was going to have a new niece! I wanted to do something special. But what?
I called Christy and found out she was doing the nursery in “Ballerina Bears”. I looked all over for fabric that would match. Nothing. Nada. Zippo, Zilch. I couldn’t find a single piece of fabric that I thought would coordinate well with her layette. So, I did what I always do and went wild—I went a whole other direction.
I found this Ballerina fabric—not bears, but what are you gonna do?—and I matched it to a solid color fabric and found the border frame fabric to coordinate…it all looked good together but something was missing.
I really wanted to do something special.
Finally I realized what I wanted to do… but I had never done it before…appliqué!
I spent hours practicing on scrap fabric and finally thought I had the gist of it. I got on-line and found a graphic of Ballerina slippers that I liked, blew it up larger and then traced it onto the fabric. I used “Quilt Binding Tape” for the laces of the slippers—cute huh? I was so proud of the finished product.
I brought it in to show my husband, Lester. I was telling him that I was going to make the next block the same way—only in mirror image… he suggested instead, I make a Ballerina Tutu. I looked all over the net for a graphic of a Tutu to trace… couldn’t find one anywhere. Finally decided to attempt to draw one of my own.
Wish I hadn’t.
I wasn’t too pleased with the final product… I wish I had stuck with the original idea of Ballerina slippers. But, overall it was a sweet little quilt for Tummy-time and I was tickled with it. Quilted it in straight lines all over. Christy seemed pleased so that’s what matters.
