The Martian
By: Andy Weir
SCIENCE FICTION
I am not usually a Sci-Fi kind of gal when it comes to books. I love watching it on TV, but reading it…it’s not the same. HOWEVER, read The Martian to fulfill a category in my book club reading list and truly enjoyed it.
It’s a very simple story. There’s not a lot of…fluff…no romance, mystery, or murder elements…no side stories. It’s a very straightforward story about one man’s survival in a hostile environment. Since I usually read books that have aspects of all the above mentioned features (romance, murder, & mayhem) and more characters than you can shake a stick at; this story was a refreshing change of pace.
I never felt the science was above my head. It was explained in a very blue collar manner without making the story lag. I never felt as if I was drowning in an info dump either. It was very well written.
The main character was sympathetic and yet never lost his humor despite the difficulties he faced. He was someone I wanted to cheer for and did!
I have not yet seen the movie (starring Matt Damon) that come from this book. Now I would certainly like to.
I would recommend this book to anyone.
